Michael Phelps became the first man to swim under 50 seconds for the 100m butterfly as he took gold at the World Championships in Rome.
The 14-time Olympic champion had appeared vulnerable going into the final after Milorad Cavic had lowered his world record in Friday's semis. But despite turning more than half a body-length down at the turn, in fourth, he moved through the field to touch out the Serbian in 49.82seconds.
The win prompted a rare outburst of aggressive celebration from the American, following all the recent controversy over swimsuits.
"A bunch of friends at home texted me last night and this morning telling me this race was mine and that I had to go for it," he said.
"I knew if I went out from the turn 23.4 or 23.5 seconds I would be in with a chance.
"I don't think I have ever been that emotional or pumped up after a race. You saw by my reaction how much I wanted that.
"I know comments have been made in the past and I welcome them. Comments motivate me and I let my swimming do the talking."
